The head of Chechnya, Ramzan Kadyrov, called the employees of the US State Department who prepared the statement on “abductions and arbitrary detentions” citizens in the region, ignoramuses. He published his appeal in the Telegram channel.

“I expected a more sensible statement, but it turned out that the authors of the State Department’s appeal are still those ignoramuses who do not understand what powers the head of the subject of the Russian Federation has and what structures are subordinate to him, and which are not,” — written by Kadyrov. He recalled that the head of the Russian region, in accordance with the law, “cannot condemn, pardon, detain, release.”

Earlier on Thursday, the State Department released a statement on behalf of the representative of the department, Ned Price, in which he expressed concern about the situation in Chechnya. “The United States is concerned about incoming reports of abductions and arbitrary detentions carried out by the authorities of the Chechen Republic, including dozens of reports of abductions and arbitrary detentions in recent weeks against relatives of Chechen human rights activists and dissidents,” it says in the release.

The State Department also expressed concern about pressure on relatives of Chechen “dissidents” who are outside of Russia. “Such acts, which harm entire families, constitute a particularly pernicious form of repression,” added to the department. They also mentioned the situation with the wife of former judge Saydi Yangulbaev, Zarema Musaeva, who was taken from Nizhny Novgorod to Grozny on January 20.

“We reject the unfounded attempts of the head of Chechnya, Ramzan Kadyrov, to slander human rights activists and independent journalists, and urge him to stop persecution by the authorities dissidents, representatives of LGBTQI+, representatives of religious and ethnic minorities and other persons, including through repressions against members of their families,— added in department.

Akhmed Dudayev, Minister for National Policy, Foreign Relations, Press and Information of Chechnya, also commented on the statements of the US State Department.

“The baseless accusations of the United States against the backdrop of the atrocities that their government is doing inside and outside the states sound ridiculous and absurd . Human rights in the Chechen Republic are under the reliable protection of Ramzan Kadyrov personally,— said Dudayev on Instagram.

The Chechen minister noted that “countless” incidents of police violence, “harassment” human rights, racial discrimination, abuse of prisoners in prisons. Dudayev also recalled the murder of George Floyd (a policeman who was sentenced to 22 years in prison was found guilty of his death). He wrote that “the whole country protested against police brutality and even this did not lead to anything.”

Zarema Musaeva— wife of ex-judge Saydi Yangulbaev and mother of human rights activist Abubakar Yangulbaev. Armed men broke into her apartment and presented a decision to forcibly bring her in for questioning, after which they took the woman away.

The next day, Kadyrov confirmed that Musaeva had been taken to Grozny, and stressed that the law enforcement officers “committed lawful and agreed-upon operational actions. According to him, the summons was sent to Yangulbayev three times. The head of Chechnya also claimed that the family may have been involved in organizing an attack on a former Chechen security official in Turkey.
