President Vladimir Putin addressed the Russians with congratulations on the occasion of Russia Day. Opening the ceremony of presenting state awards in the Kremlin, he read out a congratulatory address, noting that this holiday symbolizes the pride of the people for the country and faith in its future.
“Today we are especially acutely aware of how important it is for the fatherland, society, people be united,” Putin said. “Such unity, devotion to the motherland, responsibility for it was bequeathed to us by our ancestors.”
Putin noted that traditions and moral foundations have been growing stronger over the thousand-year history of the country: “Sincere, deep feelings patriotism were and remain sacred.”
“We are proud of the accomplishments and military victories of our ancestors. All of them who sought to discover new things, achieve progressive development, defend their homeland and assert its worthy role in the world,” Putin added .
“In all these areas, of course, Emperor Peter I has special, outstanding merits,” Putin said, listing the monarch's achievements in various spheres of political, military and public life, in particular, in broadcasting and education.
